Tasting: Whiskey Warmers

We are combining tastings this week to highlight several wonderful Whiskey-enhanced products from wine to cider to beer and even a beer-barrel bourbon. The samples are listed below…and there may just be a few extra whiskey-centric surprises for those who attend… :)

Samples to include:

Finca Las Moros Bourbon BBL Cabernet: Dusty dark ruby garnet color. Aromas and flavors of freshly conditioned leather, charred blueberry pie crusts, orange drink, and vanilla marshmallow with a satiny, crisp, fruity medium-to-full body and a seamless, interesting, medium-length cherry gelato and woodruff syrup finish with firm, chewy tannins and moderate oak.

Thistly Cross Whiskey Cask Cider: Clear golden, smooth, medium-dry Scottish cider. Matured in ex-Glen Moray (previously Glenglassaugh Distillery) whiskey casks this is a dry & subtle cider. Infused with mellow, vanilla oak of the cask. A refreshing, complex drink to be savored.

Chateau Diana Protest Rye BBL Red BlendThis is a Sonoma Valley Red blend wine aged in craft Rye Whisky barrels. The Rye whiskey aromas are uniquely subtle and meld well with the silky, dense-fruit Syrah with hints of cigar box and fresh leaf tobacco. The intense, dusty-black fruit flavors have a warm intermingling of the Rye whiskey flavors. The flavor extends with more delicious chewy, bacon-fat tones, with deep blackberry and black raspberry jam highlights.

New Holland Dragon’s Milk BBBL Stout:  One of the OG bourbon barrel-aged beers – there is good reason the brewery started to send these out in 4 packs! Roasty malt character intermingled with deep vanilla tones, all dancing in an oak bath.

New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon: Something special here. A bourbon finished in Dragon’s Milk Barrels. Robust with flavors of toffee and caramel from toasted oak, the beer barrels add smooth malt and biscuit notes to the final dram. A great example of product reuse.

Gold Nugget Mandarins

Named because of  its beautiful, bright and slightly bumpy rind,  the Gold Nugget was more than half a century in the making. It started with the very first cross in 1953 when UC Riverside, scientists and growers began seeking a mandarin that included the best properties of a seedless, easy-to-peel Satsuma in a larger size. And they wanted this to be a late-season mandarin so it didn’t compete in the market with the already popular Satsuma or Clementine. The result was the Gold Nugget.

In fact, some people consider them one of the best flavored citrus in the world. The Gold Nugget variety of mandarins is deliciously sweet with a bright orange, seedless interior. They are easy-to-peel and separate into segments. With their incredibly juicy taste, they brighten up salads and desserts, while also being a great lunchbox snack.
